Getting ready… and Scholarship!

 In Workshops

When Joanne Sharpe and I filmed here at the Nest earlier this year, we KNEW what we were creating together was M.A.G.I.C. And I don’t mean as in we thought the art was awesome (although it totally was), but as in as teachers, we knew we were nailing it.Miss Quoted-Jane Davenport- 11

We did a tonne of filming together, and made lists of what we needed to go work on in our own time for the class.

I am going through Joanne’s Videos now of the exclusive Miss Quoted alphabet lesson she created for the workshop, and I am having an emotional reaction! I’m super excited to present the videos (heck! What Jo created for the alphabet is a mini-class all of it’s own!)
Screen Shot 2015-11-03 at 1.43.50 pmI’m proud of my friend’s teaching ability. It’s one thing to create beautiful work while others are watching and provide inspiration, but it’s a whole other skill to articulate the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ as you go.

Seeing Jo’s videos inspires me to make my lessons as juicy and interesting and informative as possible.   These things are always on my agenda whenever I teach, but I love to receive an inspirational boost! And believe me I need it right now.

I am just back from my Escape Artist Retreats in Paris and London and my Body Clock has decided it is French. Screen Shot 2015-11-01 at 3.28.07 pm

I’m hoping it leaves the Eiffel tower and decides to join the rest of my body back home in Byron Bay soon because I need all my energy as I get ‘Miss Quoted’ ready to open this Thursday!

When I film a class I create the lessons the week before they go ‘Live’. This keeps me in-tune with the mood of the participants and the workshop. I always have a highly organised lesson plan, but I like to stay supple and react to what my students are finding most exciting and try to incorporate those things.  This may terrify some, but I love working this way. But it takes ENERGY.

For instance, I posted this image on Instagram, and I think it gathered the most Hearts, Likes and comments I have ever had from a single image. And she is certainly part of the ‘Miss Quoted’ ethos, so I am adding her as a lesson.

I'm reminiscing about Monet's Garden... #escapeartistretreat #janedavenportartist

I’m reminiscing about Monet’s Garden… #escapeartistretreat #janedavenportartist

In Miss Quoted, Jo and I combine the wonder of watercolour and ink to create loose and free artwork and artful lettering. My theory is that “all is forgiven in a sketch”. So by keeping artwork and lettering loose and expressive you stay away from your inner perfectionista.

Miss Quoted-Jane Davenport- 08

The hanging lines and unfinished areas add energy and interest. I want my artwork to look as if it arrived effortlessly. Of course that’s not the case, it takes work, but in ‘Miss Quoted’ I teach you exactly how I achieve this! And then Jo Shows you the same principles for lettering.

This style of art is perfect for celebrating some of the most misquoted, controversial and exciting women of their time! So a fun part of the workshop is taking actual quotes from infamous and courageous women through history.

The wonderful part about a good collaboration is you have someone else to inspire you and boost your energy. I feel that’s what Jo and I have in ‘Miss Quoted’!

Will you be joining us? I hope so!

“Cas, Cas, open your heart to Magic!” said by Mary T. a tiny and strong elderly lady, now passed, who lived in the Memory Care unit where my partner resides. She would have the most amazing one-sided “conversations” with folks from her life, and would often say things that were so lucid and penetrating they just took your breath away. I think Cas (spelling?) was either her sister, or one of her daughters. Thank you, Jane, for this opportunity to honor Mary’s philosophy!

I always wanted a happy ending… Now I’ve learned, the hard way, that some poems don’t rhyme, and some stories don’t have a clear beginning, middle and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it without knowing what’s going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity.

There’s no prohibition for old women to climb trees. – Astrid Lindgren

And a long one from Jenny Joseph:
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people’s gardens And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

My all time favorite quote, which I’ve discovered does get mis-quoted as most people tend to leave the “but” out of the quote. The whole quote is:

“There is freedom waiting for you,
On the breezes of the sky,
And you ask “What if I fall?”
    Oh but my darling,
What if you fly?” ~ Erin Hanson

This is a particularly meaningful quote for me as I continually second guess myself and my dreams and am always afraid to take chances. More so with my art than anything else. One of the reasons I decided to take Miss-Quoted is to help me just let things free flow and stop striving for perfection. As I’m learning from Jane’s other courses, the loose art is sooooo much more interesting than perfect art.
I am SO ready to FLY! 🙂

    Hi Jane
I would love the Scholarship, however I am not writing this for me – it is for a very dear friend who has had a difficult 18 months since her father had a stroke and she has had to go from being the daughter to the carer, teacher, nurse, physio and counselor. All of this has been whilst Jodie is raising a toddler, trying to keep her job and loving her husband. Jodie is contemplating walking away from her art and creative pursuits because she can’t find the love for it anymore, and I know that a little love from outside goes a really long way when times are tough.
So I would love to apply for a Scholarship for my dear friend Jodie.S. and let her know that…

My whole life from a young child to mid life, Judy Garland herself (and her life), and as the infamous Dorothy has been an uplifting inspiration. Simply beautiful, very deep, and a reminder that often what we seek and are searching for is right there before our eyes and within and around us……There’s no place like home!

    Judy Garland:
“I’ve always taken the ‘Wizard of Oz’ very seriously, you know. I believe in the idea of the rainbow. And I’ve spent my entire life trying to get over it.”

Dorothy – The Wizard of Oz :
“Some where over the rainbow way up high, there’s a land that I heard of once in a lullaby. Some where over the rainbow skies are blue, and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true. Some day I’ll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are far behind me. Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that’s where you’ll find me. Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly, birds fly over the rainbow why then, oh why can’t I. If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow. Why, oh why can’t I?”

“If ever I go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own backyard. Because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with.”

So awesome and generous of you guys (gals) to give us all this wonderful opportunity.
    Fingers crossed and thank you.
