Brush Stroke Mermaid TUTORIAL

 In Davenparty

G’day Friends!

So we all love mermaids right?

Today I’ve got a fun and simple tutorial for you lovely Creatives looking to add a bit of mermaid magic to your art journals, planners, butterfly books- WHATEVER!

The foundation is super simple and broken up into very manageable geometric shapes, then comes the fun part… DECORATING! The opportunities are endless, I’ve used calligraphy brushes, fountain pens, doodled in their tails and even created them with washi tapes. Once you get the hang of it you’ll want to find a ton of ways to customise them yourself.

Below is a video tutorial with a very very special guest trying it alongside me… my husband Steve! He wanted to try it and show you guys that literally ANYONE can do it 🙂

The first part of the video shows the basic principles and the ‘brush stroke’ mermaid, the second is a more decorative washi tape version, and the end features a small selection of clips showcasing the different versions that pop up in my art journals.

If you wanna skip the video and get started right away, here is a quick look at exactly what the foundation looks like and some decorative elements I like to include.

If it still seems overwhelming, don’t stress, just think of it as a circle, four triangles and some sticks 😀

As always- DON’T TRY TO BE PERFECT! These mermaids tend to look more effective created with reckless abandon.

Have fun and be sure to share your wonderful creations, I can’t wait to see a ton of brush stroke mermies (and their various incarnations) all over everyone’s beautiful journal pages!

WOW James what a fabulous tutorial – I don’t have mermaid markers but I couldn’t help but doodle along with a ball point pen (I need more practice with those eyes!). Steve made drawing a mermaid look totally effortless <3
