In-Person Workshops at JDHQ
Mullumbimby, NSW · Australia
There’s nothing quite like gathering together in real life — sketchbooks open, tea warm, colours swirling.
My in-person workshops are held in my dedicated creative space at JDHQ, nestled between forest and sea in Mullumbimby, NSW. You’ll join a small, intimate circle of fellow Davenpeeps for a weekend of creative immersion: learning new techniques, playing with beautiful art supplies (sometimes even unreleased ones), and gently, joyfully building your artistic confidence.
These workshops are designed to feel like creative retreats — spacious, inspiring, and joyfully unpolished. Expect laughter, experimentation, quiet focus, aha-moments, and pages that surprise you in the very best way. You’ll leave with a fuller sketchbook, a lighter heart, and a renewed sense of trust in your own creative voice.
All practical details — what to bring, where to be, and how to prepare — will be sent in your confirmation email, so you can simply arrive ready to dive in.
✨ Throughout the weekend, you’ll also have the option of private shopping in the JDHQ warehouse (with an exclusive discount) should temptation strike.
February 21–22
Watercolour Wonderland
This is a love letter to watercolour — playful, expressive, and a little bit magical.
Watercolour Wonderland is about loosening your grip, letting the paint do some of the talking, and rediscovering the joy of colour in motion. We’ll explore flow, bloom, layering, lifting, and mark-making, learning how to coax personality and emotion from watercolour rather than trying to control it into submission.
Perfect for curious beginners and experienced painters alike, this workshop focuses on confidence over correctness. You’ll learn how to work with watercolour’s quirks, build luminous layers, and create pages that feel alive and spontaneous.
Expect splashes, surprises, and that moment where you realise: Oh… I actually trust myself with this now.
April 4–5
In The Layercake Lounge
Pull up a chair. This is where things get delicious.
Layercake Lounge is a deep, satisfying dive into my signature opaque watercolour technique — layering, blending, and building rich, velvety colour with ease. This workshop is all about creating depth without mud, softness without fear, and portraits and figures that feel cohesive, expressive, and finished.
We’ll work slowly and intentionally, focusing on colour relationships, skin tones, edges, and painterly transitions. It’s technical in the best way — grounded, practical, and immediately usable — but always with room for play and personal style.
This workshop is ideal if you love structure and freedom, and want your work to feel more resolved without losing its soul.
May 23–24
Mixed Media Mermaids
Come swim in the in-between.
Mixed Media Mermaids is a celebration of layering across mediums — ink, paint, collage, pencil, pastel — and letting them dance together on the page. This workshop is intuitive, exploratory, and perfect for artists who love texture, story, and a little bit of mess.
We’ll create whimsical, expressive figures and faces, build rich backgrounds, and explore how different materials can support (rather than fight) each other. You’ll learn how to move fluidly between tools, fix “mistakes” with confidence, and trust the evolution of a page.
This is for the artists who like their creativity a little wild, a little dreamy, and deeply personal.
June 27–28
Face Intensive
Two days. One focus. A big creative shift.
Face Intensive is exactly what it sounds like — a concentrated, supportive deep dive into drawing and painting faces. We’ll break faces down into approachable shapes, explore proportion without fear, and focus on expression, mood, and character rather than perfection.
This workshop is for anyone who’s ever said, “I love faces… but they intimidate me.”
By the end of the weekend, they won’t.
Through guided exercises, repetition, and gentle refinement, you’ll build a reliable framework for faces that actually sticks — one you can return to again and again in your own work.
Expect breakthroughs, quiet pride, and that delicious moment when a face finally looks back at you and feels right.
✨ Every workshop is designed for artists of all levels—from newbies taking their first strokes to seasoned Sketchercisers expanding their creative flow. As a flexible teacher with knowledge combined with small group sizes, I tailor the workshop for individual needs. Bring your curiosity, your favourite journal to share, your lunch, and your love of colour. The classroom awaits with the rest!
Ready to Join me?
Spaces in these workshops are limited so that every artist gets plenty of attention, encouragement, and room to bloom. If one of these themes makes your heart skip, don’t wait too long—seats often fill quickly, and I’d love to have you with us.
Come as you are, bring your curiosity, and step into a weekend (or weekday!) of colour, connection, and creative play. Your sketchbook will thank you—and so will your soul
Angus and I look forward to welcoming you to JDHQ!
