Undulate across the page

The Undulation journal has translucent paper that you can see through.

It can be used with all art supplies and I especially love it with watermedia, even though it isn’t a ‘watercolour’ paper!

The Undulation paper has a soft handle and fine, almost peachy feel. The paper is translucent and you can see layers of art through it. The paper is used in traditional Chinese and Japanese calligraphy because inks are not absorbed like a blotting paper, but can balance on the surface as they dry.

THE DETAILS:

  • B5 size
  • 18.5 x 26cm
  • 7.25 x 10.25 inches
  • 42 sheets – (84 ‘back and fronts’)

Ripe rice paper is a wonderful choice for journals due to its unique texture and eco-friendly properties. This paper is made from the inner bark of the mulberry tree, which is sustainably harvested, making it a renewable resource. The process of creating rice paper involves soaking the fibers, beating them into a pulp, and then carefully drying the thin sheets, resulting in a delicate yet strong surface. Ripe rice paper is known for its smooth finish, making it perfect for various mediums, including ink, watercolors, and pencils. It’s often favored by calligraphers and artists for its ability to absorb ink without bleeding, while maintaining a lightweight and almost translucent quality. Additionally, rice paper has been used for centuries in traditional Asian art and craft, from painting to bookbinding, due to its versatility and durability. Your journal made with this high-quality material is not just beautiful but also honors a long tradition of craftsmanship!

The transluscent Window Pane paper has a lovely crinkle effect and feel as you use it, sounding almost like glassine paper. The more water you add, the more of a crinkle you will get. What would annoy us in other papers delights us in this paper, as it adds to the entire experience of using this journal. The crinkles  smooth back out over time, but the ‘used’ pages’ have a delightful worn in quality that is hard to explain… it is something that needs to be experienced!

What Jane says

I love the delicacy of the paper and the way it handles watercolour, Layercake, acrylic and pens. It’s the only paper I have in my collection that doesn’t love coloured pencils and that is why I call it ‘Undulation’… it prefers art supplies that can undulate across its surface.
